You already have a 17 Pro. Should you pay extra for an 18 Pro? Ignore the chip name. Start with these seven checks: one hour of YouTube, 30 minutes of gaming, 30 minutes of 4K, 15 minutes of charging, gaming heat, Geekbench, and 3DMark Stress.
Three rules decide it: can you feel the hourly battery gap → do games and 4K get hot enough to drop frames → is variable aperture plus a 15-minute half charge worth about CNY 1,000 extra on the China store, or the U.S. list price of $1,199. Numbers come from Apple’s published ratings and Tom’s Guide’s September 17, 2026 benchmarks—not an in-house three-round lab.
How far apart are iPhone 18 Pro and 17 Pro in real use? Read this table first
| Test | 18 Pro | 17 Pro | How to read it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 hour of YouTube | about −3.0% | about −3.3% | From Apple’s 33h / 30h streamed ratings; you will not feel one hour |
| 30 minutes of gaming | paired drain not published | paired drain not published | The gap is sustained frames, not a few extra points |
| 30 minutes of 4K | variable-aperture main | fixed ƒ/1.78 | Paired drain unpublished; the gap is image quality |
| 15-minute charge | about 50% (60W required) | still under 50% (50% takes 20 minutes) | About 5 minutes faster to half; adapter sold separately |
| 30-minute game temperature | paired °C unpublished | paired °C unpublished | Use Stress as the heat proxy: 62.8% vs 61.1% |
| Geekbench 6 | 4,735 / 12,800 | 3,834 / 9,988 | About +24% single, +28% multi |
| 3DMark Stress | 62.8% | 61.1% | Regular Pro gains 1.7 points; Max jumps 65.2% → 79.4% |
One hour of YouTube, 30 minutes of games, 30 minutes of 4K: how much battery drops?
Apple’s eSIM-only streamed video: 18 Pro 33 hours, 17 Pro 30 hours. Divide 100 by those hours and you get about −3.0% vs −3.3% per hour. Local video playback is 36 vs 33 hours—the same ~0.3-point hourly gap.
That is how to read “one hour of YouTube”: not two phones on a desk for 60 minutes, but Apple’s own streamed ceiling turned into an hourly cost. Typical use is published only for 18 Pro at 24 hours. 17 Pro has no matching figure, so do not subtract 24 hours into a fake daily drain.
| Rating | 18 Pro | 17 Pro | Hourly drain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Streamed video (closer to YouTube) | 33 hours | 30 hours | about −3.0% / −3.3% |
| Local video playback | 36 hours | 33 hours | about −2.8% / −3.0% |
| Typical use | 24 hours | not published on the same basis | do not invent a delta |
| Pro Max video playback | 45 hours | 39 hours | the 6-hour jump lives on the large phone |
Paired drain for 30 minutes of high-quality 3D or 30 minutes of 4K recording is not in the first-wave public reviews. What is clear: a half-hour game is decided by throttling, not “one extra percent”; 4K is decided by the main aperture, not the battery. China units with a SIM tray have no separate rating; the hours above are Apple’s eSIM-only figures.
- Charge both to 100%, lock brightness at 50%, use Airplane or the same Wi‑Fi, play the same 1080p YouTube for 60 minutes, log the drop
- Same game, same quality, 30 minutes, then log battery and whether the back is hot
- Record 4K 60 fps for 30 minutes; watch heat and file size, not only the percentage
Does 30 minutes of gaming get hot? Does 3DMark Stress hold?
Apple says the new vapor chamber has 3× last year’s area and up to about 40% more sustained performance. Tom’s Guide’s Wild Life Extreme Stress splits that claim: 18 Pro 62.8%, 17 Pro 61.1%—the regular Pro gains 1.7 points.
The real jump is Max: 65.2% to 79.4%. A 6.3-inch shell can hold a larger chamber and still has little room to dump heat. “18 Pro runs cooler” is not a promise for the standard Pro.
| Phone | 3DMark Stress | Solar Bay | What 30 minutes of gaming means |
|---|---|---|---|
| 18 Pro | 62.8% | 61.93 fps / 16,288 | Higher peak; sustained almost matches 17 Pro |
| 17 Pro | 61.1% | 46.4 fps / 12,208 | Lower peak; after 30 minutes it sits near 18 Pro |
| 18 Pro Max | 79.4% | 67.9 fps / 17,850 | This is where 3× chamber area shows up in your hand |
| 17 Pro Max | 65.2% | 46.6 fps / 12,260 | Last year’s large phone was not stable either; Max pulls away this year |
Peak graphics do jump: Solar Bay average frames go from 46.4 to 61.93, about +33%. That explains a snappier load-in. It does not explain a cooler half hour. If you buy for long outdoor sessions, read the Max row, not 18 Pro’s peak fps.
In 15 minutes of charging, how much more does 18 Pro take on?
Apple is specific: 18 Pro with a 60W or higher adapter that supports adjustable voltage reaches about 50% in 15 minutes on a cable. 17 Pro needs 40W or higher and about 20 minutes to 50%. In the same 15-minute window, 18 Pro can hit half; 17 Pro is still short.
| Method | 18 Pro | 17 Pro | What you need |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wired to 50% | about 15 minutes | about 20 minutes | 18 Pro wants a 60W-class brick; a 20W brick will not |
| MagSafe to 50% | 30 minutes (35W+) | 30 minutes (30W+) | Wireless half-charge time barely moved |
| MagSafe / Qi2 ceiling | 25W | 25W | Do not expect wireless to catch that 5 minutes |
| 5-minute top-up | not published on regular Pro | — | About 7 hours of video playback is listed only for 18 Pro Max |
The gap is five minutes to half, not “20 extra points in 15 minutes.” The box still has no high-watt brick. A 20W brick on the desk makes both phones slow. A café cable will not unlock 18 Pro’s 15-minute half charge.
- Start from under 5%, same USB‑C cable, a brick that actually meets the rated watts
- At 15 minutes, 18 Pro should be near 50%; 17 Pro should sit clearly below
- Stop if the phone is hot; do not mix this test with gaming or 4K
Is variable aperture worth the upgrade?
This is the one spec that turns into a different picture. Both 18 Pro and Max use a 48MP Fusion main with ƒ/1.48–ƒ/4; 17 Pro’s main is fixed at ƒ/1.78. Low light can open up; groups and buildings can stop down to ƒ/4.
| How you shoot | 18 Pro helps? | 17 Pro enough? | Call |
|---|---|---|---|
| Night, indoor portraits, you want to stop down | Yes | Fixed aperture | The hardest reason to switch |
| Daytime QR codes, chat screenshots, the occasional dish | You will not notice | Enough | Do not pay extra for the camera |
| 4K 120 / long outdoor takes | More flexible main | Can record | Drain unpublished; watch heat and bokeh |
| You only want a “Pro triple camera” | Not a must-buy 18 | Already Pro-class | Same capacity 17 Pro costs less |
Geekbench is 20%+ higher. Will you feel it day to day?
Tom’s Guide Geekbench 6: 18 Pro 4,735 / 12,800, 17 Pro 3,834 / 9,988. About +24% single-core and +28% multi-core. Geekbench 7 is 4,022 / 11,543 vs 3,138 / 8,692—the same direction. A20 Pro is 2nm, 6-core CPU, 7-core GPU, dual Neural Engines. Apple’s GPU claim of about 40% faster sits in the same band as Solar Bay’s +33%.
| Scene | Does the score gap show up? | Should you care? |
|---|---|---|
| Messages, Safari, Mail | No | 17 Pro is already smooth |
| Launching a heavy game, opening a 4K timeline | The first seconds feel sharper | Care about launch, not the half hour after |
| Sustained 3D / heavy on-device AI | Regular Pro almost ties | Read Stress, not Geekbench |
| On-device AI score | 69,245 vs 49,050 | The number is up; Siri AI already starts at 15 Pro |
Geekbench AI moves from 49,050 to 69,245, about +41%—not a double. Daily Siri and summaries already start at 15 Pro. Do not upgrade for this score. Developers who need the 18 Pro SDK are buying device coverage, not a multi-core number. Archive and signing still live on a Mac; see U.S. / China / Hong Kong / Japan differences.
Should you switch to 18 Pro or keep 17 Pro?
Worth switching means, among 17 Pro, 18 Pro, and 18 Pro Max, your current phone already fails on battery, heat, or camera—not “highest score, so everyone should buy.”
| If | Then |
|---|---|
| 17 Pro lasts the day and you only want a benchmark bump | Keep it; one hour of YouTube differs by about 0.3 points |
| You want to stop down for night and group shots | Move to 18 Pro; both sizes have variable aperture |
| A 30-minute game already throttles from heat | Regular 18 Pro barely moves on Stress; buy Max or drop quality |
| You only plug in for 15 minutes and own a 60W brick | Those 5 minutes matter; a 20W brick erases the gap |
| Budget is “Pro-class” and you will not add about CNY 1,000 / the $1,199 list | Keep 17 Pro or wait for channel pricing |
| You must test iOS 27 / 18 Pro SDK and builds cannot stop | Split the test phone from Archive; keep a stable Mac for builds |
What else do people ask about iPhone 18 Pro vs 17 Pro?
How much more battery does iPhone 18 Pro have than 17 Pro?
Apple eSIM-only: 36 vs 33 hours of video, 33 vs 30 hours streamed. As one hour of YouTube that is about −3.0% vs −3.3%. Max is 45 vs 39 hours—the larger jump.
Does 18 Pro run cooler in games?
The regular Pro almost does not. 3DMark Stress is 62.8% vs 61.1%. The 3× chamber mainly shows on Max (79.4% vs 65.2%).
How far does 18 Pro charge in 15 minutes?
Apple: about 50%, with a 60W-or-higher adapter that supports adjustable voltage. 17 Pro needs about 20 minutes to 50%. MagSafe half charge is still about 30 minutes.
Should you buy 18 Pro only for benchmarks?
No. Geekbench 6 is about +24% / +28%. You will not feel that in short video. Switch for aperture, wired speed, or Max sustained performance.
How much more does China-store 18 Pro cost than 17 Pro?
About CNY 1,000 at the same capacity. 256GB 18 Pro lists at CNY 9,999. U.S. 256GB 18 Pro is $1,199. See the launch article for regional prices.
Where do 18 Pro and 17 Pro actually differ right now?
Switch to 18 Pro if you will use variable aperture, or you own a 60W brick and often charge for only 15 minutes, and you accept about CNY 1,000 more on the China store (or $1,199 U.S. list).
Do not switch if 17 Pro lasts your day, you only want a higher Geekbench, or you expect the regular Pro to stay cool for a 30-minute game—the table does not show that.
